Experimental Geochemistry

The facility for experimental petrology centers on an array of 18 cold-seal pressure vessels capable of extended operation to 850C at 200 MPa. Other furnaces are present for work to 1800C at 1 atm and are used for the fabrication of glasses.

Electron Microprobe
The Electron Microprobe Laboratory centers around a Cameca SX-50 microbeam analyzer. The instrument carries 5 wavelength-dispersive x-ray spectrometers for elemental analysis of all elements heavier than Be. The latest upgrades of operating system, energy-dispersive x-ray analyzer, and a cathodoluminescence detector custom fabricated for our machine (the first and only such CLD on an SX-50 from Oxford Instruments) make this the most capable instrument of its type in the world.
